Well I'm trying to make the header (bit that currently black) go right accross the screen and then the rest of the forum is there.

I tried putting a table in, but it stuffed the rest of the layout up.

Can anyone help?

Do you mean you want that your header is going across the whole screen but the forum stays as it is?

Yeah basically.
So the black bit (with the gradient below) right across the screen and the rest of the forum to stay as it is.

Try moving the HTML for that portion above 
<div id="container">
and set its width to 100%
