i just barely learned about portal.php , mine is very plain i'm just wondering what ya'll know of that you can do with the portal page, what you use it for, and how you use it for whatever you use it for? What mods/plugins you use etc...

It's basically just supposed to be used as homepage for a site that's just a forum I guess.
There is a mod that will make it the first page you see without any editing. But it's basically just to make sure people see the news?
To my knowledge there aren't any mods made just for the portal but some have it so your index will look a portal.
It's basically for your users to find out:
1) The latest announcements
2) Latest updated threads
3) Number of new posts/threads/announcements since last visit
4) Quick links to search, private messages, etc
You can add your own content too if you make the proper modifications in the portal template.
