Yes, both of those are great. I've done both and it looks so much better!

Well, one changes the color on the usernames of last post on the index page, and the other changes the color on the thread pages within the forum. Both solutions work well.

You do realize you can change it in the ACP to exclude certain groups, like unregistered and banned? That's what I do.
