I agree that it should work with all releases, unless there were major adjustments to the variables from the beginning; and I see no reason for that to have happened. The Template makers are also using the same convention to place the various on-click button functions in the Templates they make. If they decide to re-locate the function buttons, only then would the speller code have to be moved within the script to match the location in the template. But like all MODs, they have to be designed for the 'default' template, and any other template has to be taken as a separate issue.
All the real work is done by the spell-gw.php file that is uploaded to the server, and is independent of MyBB php script, aside from the MyBB script variables that handle the parsing of the various parts of the templates to the spell-checker. Its location in the script is only to 'locate' the Spell-Check button where it needs to go.
