Is there any way that forum members can be told that there is a new event just posted in the calendar and be directed to that event? Or, Do they really have to go to the calendar and look through every month to see whats there ?

There's no automatic notification by default. You'd need a plugin/modification to do that (probably quite simple too if somebody wants to take that up)
