I don't know if this is possible with MyBB, but I figure I put the suggestion out there.

This forum uses vB and on the index page (root) it shows recent threads, polls, who's online, login prompt and other bits.

Just wondering if a .php file can be created to implement similar features.

Maybe you're looking for your Portal page? Go to your board and type in portal.php (instead of index.php). There is a plugin to redirect your users to your portal page instead of your forum index, it should be on the mods site... As for the login box, this is what you'll be needing.
