Mine is a link that pops up in a separate box. I'd like it to just appear at the top of forums.
Not sure which plugin you are using at the moment, but the Spicefuse shoutbox makes it very easy for you to place your shoutbox in almost any part of your forum. Normally everyone places it at the top as you've asked.

ON the other hand, if you're using Musical Midget's shoutbox, you can insert an iframe in your index template where ever you want it to show up. Works fine on my forum.
