Personally i think MyBB just needs some more specific related themes, for example, sport themes, technology themes, car themes, etc etc at the moment most of the themes are just color changes with the odd change of code.
On my mmorpg guild forums i've tried to make the forum look different, so when users first visit they cant tell which software the forum is powered by. I dont class myself as a good themer, but i may start to make some themes with specific related content.
