Yeah side boxes will comply with TOS.
From what I understand of adsense, you can put the ads anywhere on your site that you choose. You just can't tell your visitors to click them or make it where they have to click them to navigate your pages. As long as you just place them on your forum and let them be, that won't be breaking any rules.
