can't view my private messages...I have new pms and even sent myself test PMs, but I can't view em...

I try to switch to all parts; inbox, sent mail, trash, etc...but it all looks the same but says I have 18 pms...check attachments...

Did you recently restore your forum from a backup? Did you make sure to restore the PMs from the database?

yes, I did..

as far as backing up the pms...I backed up all the tables that are listed in the admincp under the backup utility...

as far as old pms, I'm not worried, but I'd like to be able to receive new pms

Looks like your templates are messed up.
Restore/revert/delete all templates related to private messaging.
