I'm talking about a feature like this:

for group "Colours", you get the ranks as such:

0 posts - "black"
10 posts - "white"
100 posts - "green"
500 posts - "red"

for group "forums", you get as such:

0 posts - phpbb
200 posts - smf
1000 posts - IPB
2000 posts - vb
3000 posts - mybb

what do you think?

In MyBB 1.4 you can create automatic promotions to promote users from one group to another based on post count. I guess you can first assign a group to the user (either "Forums" or "Colours") and then have the automatic promotion system promote them at every post count level.

But that means making a group for each rank..

Yup. That's the only way it'll work with MyBB 1.4 without any modification/plugin unfortunately.

From what I understand, a Group basically is a Rank - why would you want it separate?

Because their on sort of like teams or something and they want to keep it consistent with colors having titles for colors, etc... Get my drift?
