At this moment the version of myBB I use is MyBB 1.2.6 and have no problem working with it.
Do I have to upgrade to a newer version or can I still keep using MyBB 126 ?

Yes, MyBB comes with an upgrade script that will automatically perform any changes needed to your existing data, it will not erase it.
The upgrader will do the work. However to be safe it is always recommended that you make a backup of your database and files.
