How do I get {whosonline} in the results for view new posts, I have tried to just add it to the Search template, however it does not return any the whosonline, what am I missing ?

{$whosonline} is replaced with code that is executed from the index.php page, which is not available on other pages, and would require code modification or a plugin to work.

So if I extract the code from Index.php and make a whosonline.php with that code, would I be going in the right direction ?

In a sense. There is a chuck of code that makes the the who's online code work. You can copy and paste the into the search.php file, but you'd have to paste it in certain areas to prevent it from showing up when doing a normal search. Then you'd have to add a piece of code from the index template to the "new posts" template. Then it should be done.
