Just wondering why you guys decided to go with using utf-8 as the default characterset in mysql. I may be wrong about all of this but I thought the iso-english characterset was faster? Not everyone uses more than 1 language.

Edit: Also why is there a "Convert to utf-8" option in the admin panel if its by default?

There is no visible speed difference difference between character sets. UTF-8 aims to support all possible character sets in one.

The convert to utf-8 is for users who have chosen other character sets other than UTF-8.
