how do I get that 5 star rating module above the thread?
currently, there is a drop down menu with ratings
but I would like to use the 5 star rating module like the one available on community.mybboard.net

(like on this thread, next to new reply, is the 5 star rating module I want)

It is new rating system of MyBB 1.4. MyBB 1.4 is currently on beta. Stable version will be released end of this month. You may wait for it to be released or join beta tester team to download beta version.

Okay, is there also a way to disable a user from rating his/her own thread?

As far as i know there isn't a plugin like this. You can modify codes for this.
