Apologies for this being a new thread but I hate this appending to my previous post concept - see http://community.mybboard.net/thread-34314.html

However, I 'think' I see what the problem is (though still need an answer). The reason I saw nothing happening was that the page is cached and what I simply saw was a copy of what I saw before. Hitting the Refresh button made the announcements show up (and also updated the other boxes). Now, it's not practical to tell users to hit the Refresh button every time they view the Portal page and this isn't a problem with the forum pages so I guess it's an internal MyBB issue regarding what pages are always retrieved and which ones are cached.

So, anybody from MyBB care to comment?

Firstly, what browser are you using? Some browsers are known to have dodgey caching issues (*cough* Opera and IE).

Secondly, try these settings: AdminCP -> Settings -> Server Options:
Send No-Cache Headers: Yes
Send Standard Headers: No
