My host is 1&1 and it's a microsoft server host. From what I understand, 1&1 provide mysql only the linux host. Can I get this to work anyway even if it's not provided by the webhost?

Not unless you either have root access to the server to install MySQL, or can use another database type of database that MyBB supports.

Doesnt look like the 1and1 packages have php either so you wont be able to run it.
