I have several forums containing the character & in the forum title. Unfortunately my installation of MyBB doesn't parse "&" as "&" in the source code. Using "&" in the forum title in the ACP solves the problem.
I was not able to reproduce the error in any other forum (fresh installation). Since the "problem forum" was updated from MyBB 1.2.13, I suggest the error occured because of the upgrade.
