I installed mybb 1.4 and it's great. but i noticed that old themes don't work on the new version

I must admit that I cheated doing this. As a stop-gap, I uploaded a similar but 1.4 compatible theme and then copied across all the images from the old theme. I needed to make a couple of minor tweaks to the style sheets but it has given me what I want. I guess that there will a few undiscovered subtleties but it seems to work for me. It's not a 100% solution but near enough for now.
I thought about to cheat it
But i want to know how to full control the problem. Thanks mate for offering help.

Please run the "Find Updated Templates" tool under the Templates page in the ACP. This should assist you in upgrading your themes to work with MyBB 1.4.
most of my themes migrated across fine, however a couple of templates required adjusting to fix issues with the modcp link not showing to moderators.
