If before, you can't upgrade because error, you can try follow me.

Step 1: Login into ACP 1.2.14
_Deactive all your plugins
_Transfer to Default theme of MyBB (Theme when you install MyBB)
_Delete all theme add-in before (may be not, but remove for safe. PLEASE DON'T REMOVE DEFAULT THEME)

Step 2: Copy source 1.4 to your forum directory
_Copy all source of 1.4 to forum folder
_Do not overwrite ./inc/settings.php
_Set permission (Linux, please CHMOD 7777) for:
=> inc/config.php
=> inc/settings.php
=> uploads
=> uploads/avatars
=> cache
=> cache/themes
=> admin/backup

Step 3: Upgrade
_Run patch: domain/your_forum_dir/install
_Follow on screen to finish
_Ok, may be error avoid with your skin (from index page can't click LAST POST)

Step 4: PHPMyAdmin, select your database runing forum
_Remove 5 content in your database: mybb_templategroups, mybb_templates, mybb_templatesets, mybb_themes, mybb_themestylesheets.

Step 5: Install new forum 1.4 with new database
_Okey, clean install to get 5 content like i said above
_Open PHPMyAdmin, export mybb_templategroups, mybb_templates, mybb_templatesets, mybb_themes, mybb_themestylesheets

Step 6: Finish
_Import new file into database runing your website.
_Image: may be a few image you can copy N paste
