CHMOD the following files to 666 (ie, make sure that PHP can write to them).
how do i do this please?
chmod the files that need to be to 777 look for permissions or in SmartFTP look for Properties.
i use Fire ftp...is that the same?
Right click the file and look for something like "Properties" or "Permissions". If you still can't find it, please consult the FireFTP documentation.

I have another quick question,I changed everything to 666 or 6660 then I tried to install and the only thing that said writeable was the settings file,do I need to put everything to 777 I'm so sorry I really don't know this stuff.The fire ftp does have the option *properties* but there's a button says manual and when I put 666 it doesn't save but it does have owner then under that it says *execute,write,suid then group and beneath that it says read write and sgid.
You need:
./cache/
./uploads/
./uploads/avatars/
./inc/settings.php
./inc/config.php
As either 666 or 777.
If 666 doesn't work, change them to 777.
Folder should be 777, files should be 666.
