It has to do with database encoding on mysql <4.4
in the files inc/db_mysgl and inc/db_mysqli i added the line:
'' => 'none',
in the long list with encoding options.
There are two lists in the files so I added the line twice.
During install I selected the option database encoding 'none' and that did the trick for me.
