Actually it would be GREAT if you could tick certain posts to go on Portal and that was it.
As is, you have to create a news\announcement forum. By selecting per post (tick in, lets say, next to "make it sticky") you could pull news to the portal, while keeping the thread in it's thematic forum.
In the practical world:
You have a forum named "cookies".
To make it a news post you have to shove the post on "News" or "Announcements", when it's actually a post about cookies.
