Now I've set up a local mirror of my forum, I was wondering what the best practice is to keep the two in step.

I am thinking that I should go into phpMyAdmin, drop the tables and then reload from a backup from the live forums. Is this the best way?

Thanks
I don't think forums were really designed that way. You can replace the DB in, but it won't be a "full" synch. The main thing that'll be lacking is attachments and avatars, but it shouldn't be that big of an issue.
(other things include file/memory caches (if you have them set, you can just leave your local copy to use the DB as a datacache store), admin backups obviously won't be synched across, along with themes (which shouldn't be an issue unless you install themes very often))
Thanks ZiNgA. It will be enough to do what I want. I just need to demo the forums on a laptop in situations where there may not be an internet connection.
