Okay, I reverted the template back to use the default gifs in the skin (Afresh) and it uses them fine. However, when I switch it to the png files it does not work. Is there a reason this shouldn't work with png?

general.js uses the gif's as hard coded...you need to alter them to png as well

Labrocca fixed this for me. Go to jscripts/general.js and change the instances of on.gif, off.gif and offlock.gif to ''.png
