i'm running a contest and it would be great to hide active poll results while people vote. i will be displaying the results after the voting has stopped.

That isn't a feature of MyBB unfortunately.
You can make a suggestion or submit an idea to the ideas site, or request a plugin to be created.

You can set whether they can vote or not (by permissions) but that's about as far as it goes with MyBB's system. Currently I don't know a mod that can do that, sorry.
Also, as a word of advice, it's better to make a new thread than bump a 9 months old one.
