After I updated from 1.4.2 to 1.4.3 I registered a test account to check if registration was still working. After 10 minutes I still hadn't received an activation email (also not in spam) so with the test user account I used the option "resend activation email". A few minutes later I have the email (only 1). So I received 1 in total, I don't know if this is the delayed first automatic email or the one which I requested as the user.
Anyone else had something like this? Or was it just a temporarily problem?
There could be a number of problems - first check your System Mail log and see if there are any errors in there. I think it shows up in there...
Either way, ./admin/modules/user/users.php has changed. If you reupload the older file from 1.4.2, does it work?
I seem to have this problem on many forums that aren't even MyBB. Sometimes even when I'm not registering on a forum at all. The first email never comes, but it does when I ask for it again

There's probably dozens of reasons - email whitelisting can effect what you're experiencing. Basically (I think Hotmail does this), if you get an email from somewhere, it will first stop it from going to your inbox to scan it and check it against lists. It will let it through eventually but not before having a look at it.
If a second one is received, it's just given the green light, the original deleted and the second one is shown in your Inbox. I know our server setup here at work does this - we're using Barracuda spam protection
