Could somebody tell me what I've done wrong??

It looks like you don't have a language installed.
Try downloading Mybb 1.4.3, take the English folder and English.php and upload them to your inc folder. That should do the trick.
I'll attach the files, you can use them or download 1.4.3 and take the files from there.
It should be:
./inc/
--languages/
----english.php
----english/
------all english files
so i just upload these two files to my inc/languages?
One's a file, one's a folder with loads of files. Do you know how you even deleted them??
i don't think i deleted them.. i think i may have changed the permissions on the wrong file (its what happened to my last failed forums)
Well just double check that in ./inc/languages/ there is english.php and a folder called english with all the files in.
i dont have the folder.. O.o iv got the english.php but the folders missing
