In the template search_results_threads you can find this:

<td colspan="9" class="thead">
    <strong>{$lang->search_results}</strong>
</td>

There are only 7 columns if you're a normal user and 8 if you have moderator rights.

Probably due to when we used to have Author in it's own column.
