No, the upgrade script is essential if you apply the changed files.

update:
Upgrade successful !
1. took backup of db from acp. downloaded a copy to local
2. copied all file in the forum dir; just in case...
3. uploaded all changed files "mybb_1404_changed_files.zip" replacing the existing ones.
note: i had renamed my admin folder. so i renamed it back to 'admin' so that it will be replaced by the new ones.
4. ran forum-url/install/upgrade.php and successfully completed the upgrade process
5. renamed admin folder to the previous custom name
and DONE !
