Full Version: Question regarding difficulty of merging

Hi,

I've been using SMF for over three years now. I loved it at first, but lately it seems things keep declining with the whole package. First and foremost, the support is simply, in a word, awful. When posting a request for support, unless it's something so utterly simple that a noob could fix, well, it's a complete coin toss as to whether you'll get any support at all. Then there's the issue with poorly written and untested mods. Unless you're absolutely certain of a mod writers competence, you're literally risking the life of your forum and having to completely reinstall everything, because SMF just allows people to realease any old mod, regardless of testing or not. And today was pretty much the final straw for me. I apparently made the mistake of telling someone else that has had less than favorable results with support that I basically had the same problem. This resulted in an attack from on of their "Support Specialists" and another member of the forum, with nothing being said to either of them by an Administrator. (Sorry, I know you didn't really need the rant.)

That being said, I've been doing some researching and while I almost made the mistake of switching to phpBB, I looked over MyBB and I really think this is what I need as far as switching my forum over. My only question at this point is simply this: How difficult is it to merge the database from SMF to MyBB? I've never attempted anything like this before, so I'm somewhat nervous. I'm currently running SMF 1.1.7, if anyone needs to know.

Thanks,

Sabbz
Actually, you can just delete this topic. I created a test directory and database to upload the mybb forum up to and uploaded all the data from my db to the test and implemented the merging script and everything seems to be going smoothly.
I have done a convert from phpbb2 yesterday... its really easy (if you dont use other language characters)
but the encoding is always a problem..

You may not get the smilies or avatars, but that is just nothing.

The whole merge system sounds difficult, but it isnt..

Note: you wont lose anything from your old forum.. mybb installs in a different directory.. so you can run the merge system, and if you dont like it, you can still use your old forum, or switch to another software! (not recommended! Big Grin)

I wish I knew what I'm doing wrong, I have tried several merges from SMF 1.1.7 to MyBB 1.4 as well as 1.2 but with no success. I'm truly happy it worked for you though and I know what you mean about SMF's support or lack of it.Rolleyes
the merge system only works with 1.2
It will work if you follow the details in the wiki...

First of all, I did follow all the instructions. I have tried both merging SMF 1.1.7 to MyBB 1.2 using the 1.2 merge tool and merging directly to MyBB 1.4 using the MyBB 1.4 SVN Snapshot. Neither one worked, I got tons of errors on both.

When I get some time to waste again, I'll give it one more try. If I fail again, I'll just have to live with SMF.Dodgy

Trying the same thing again and again isn't going to help. It's just going to give you the same thing as every other time you tried unless I fix the problems. Right now, I don't have any "clear" reproduction instructions or the time to thoroughly look into these problems. I will have time in a week or two.
