Now, I have no plan of implementing this any time soon, but for the sake of knowing...

How does this work?

For example, SomethingAwful uses this. They show a ton of ad's for non-members but once you pay for a membership they all go away.

Is this a difficult task? I just want to better understand it and maybe one could point be to some information on setting it up... I know there are mod's for placing ad's, but do any offer these features?

If you're still interested, labrocca's ad plugin does exactly what you want. You can show certain ads, to certain usergroups.

That's cool. I was pretty sure something was out there just didn't want to go installing/uninstalling etc until I found something.
