I have seen many plugins to do with SEO. From what I understand this simplifies the URL of a thread?
How does this help? What is its purpose?

Some make it simpler, some add words from the thread title into the URL, some add links and keywords in various places... they just attempt to make your page easier for Mr GoogleBot to read.
So the general purpose of them is to get each thread listed on Google?

lmfao you noticed that, too? I was looking at that and had to chuckle to myself:p
I also found it strange that "spelt" wasn't a word which appeared in the American dictionary (I still had a en-us spell-checker on this Firefox install; I had to to and install the en-gb one just to reassure myself that "spelt" was indeed a word, which it is).
