I wanted to NOT show the list of sub forums on the main menu and wanted to check which file I should amend to take the {$sub_forums} item out.

It will be a forum bit template and I think forum_depth1 something?

forumbit_subforums

Just erase all the code.

Or, ACP > Configuration > Forum Home Options > Subforums to show on Index listing > set it to 0.
