I have Ubunto 8.04.2 installed, and I am thinking of upgrading to Ubuntu 8.10.
I would be able to use GIMP 2.5(6?) instead of 2.4, although GIMP 2.4 isn't bad or anything, and in fact its just as easy to work with.

Although the 8.04 is an LTS release, and gets support til 2011, as where 8.10 only gets it for a whole other year. 2010.

I dunno, maybe switch to BSD and see how it works out?

To me it seems that you shouldn't bother to upgrade.

Forgot to add that Canonical does not support update skips, so if a new LTS edition comes out, then I have the choice to upgrade to it, but should something go wrong, they don't support it. They do support upgrades though. Pain is I would have to update to 8.10 sooner or later.

GIMP 2.6 is a lot better than 2.4. So many improved features, and so many greater features.
