Is there a way to make a non-blurry .gif file?
All the ones I try, no matter what the size, always come out blurred and pixelated.

Can you give an example of a 'blurry' one?? What program are you using to make them??
You can use GIMP, it's the best and you will find a lot of tuts on the net

That's what I use, and it works fine
I have been making them with a mix of PowerPoint and Paint
Not really the best programs to use. Try and get used to Gimp, it's free.
you can use photoscape to make buttons but if you want to make the transparent background you will need another program that has that feature
