See, I thought I could take the CSS of the theme and make a folder in the cache directory named theme2, theme3, etc and add the CSS. Unfortunately I couldn't add templates that way. Plus it didn't work at all.

You might be able to do that, but think of it logically..
You need to:
1) Add templates into the database
2) Then MyBB does all the CSS back-end stuff.
If you just create the folders, I doubt it will render it correctly. Not to mention, you need to insert the templates for the theme, so you'd need to do it during the installer, or when the board is first run.
