I am starting a website geared towards Administrators (from System Admins to Forum Admins) and Web Developers. I cannot afford a commercial forum software. Would MyBB suffice and be able to hand a large, active community?
Depending on what you consider a large, active community - yes.
MyBB is being used on a 3 million+ post forum so it can handle any size it needs. What features are you looking for??
I don't think you should be worried about handling a large community yet
. I mean first you have to get there.
But, yes it's possible and Ryan has posted some things he did to optimize his large forum (can't remember it's name right now).
But, eventually you'll want to optimize any script at when you reach a certain point, even phpbb
.
So, I would look for more does MyBB meet your feature needs for now.
As a simple forum for posting, etc. MyBB is just fine. It also has a few extra features that people may disable as they are not essential for a classic 'forum'.
Install a MyBB forum and see if it's what you like. It will be able to handle whatever you throw at it.
Could someone post the link to the site that 3 Million + posts?
