IMO ultraportable is just another name for a netbook.

Except the term "ultraportable" existed far before netbook. Ultraportables are designed to fit the specs of a standard notebook in a small form factor. Netbooks are designed to sacrifice features to fit a small form factor.

This is an ultraportable. Not a netbook.
So is this http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stor...ryId=16154 an ultraportable or a netbook?

And if i put 4 gig of ram in my EEE and a 300gb hard drive in my would it make it an ultra portable?

Or how about this? Is this a netbook or a ultra portable? http://www.htc.com/www/product/shift/overview.html

I think your splitting hairs a tad there...

Was wondering when someone would bring up the VAIO P. Sony is claiming it's not a netbook, but not an ultraportable either ... they're classifying it as a "lifestyle notebook" or some crap like that. Either way, it's just a super high-end netbook. It fits better into the "between netbook and notebook" area that Yumi mentioned ...

To say that 13" isn't a notebook is seriously just silly, though.

@Brad, _Tim, Pretty much the definition of a netbook. Although Sony is a bit of an arrogant company as well. Toungue

Read this article.
Yes and it says that notebooks such as the HP mini-note are classified as an Ultraportable which is definatley also in the netbook category. Difinitive proof: Netbook = Ultraportable Toungue

To be honest i think the true netbook definition has been lost on all but the origional 7" linux EEE. It is probably the only true netbook left.
arg fine i will concede that in some cases netbook and ultraportable are interchangeable

can we at least agree that a 13" fully featured notebook is not a netbook

my brain's fried because i've been dealing with police all day because someone made a gun threat on my board

Agreed :p

I would say Smaller than 13" and has a video out is a netbook/ultraportable.
I think an important qualification for a Netbook is for it to not have an optical drive. Netbooks are not meant for interacting with optical media.
So if you stick an optical drive in a netbook, it's no longer a netbook?

It's easy to blur the lines even more, but it's useless to go further in the debate. My point was that Macs use cost cutting components (even if this excludes the exterior) yet sell for premium prices. If the exterior suits you, go for it, but if you're looking for value for money, Macs aren't the answer.
Interesting discussion Toungue
