Underneath the posts, the text is not in button form, or even separated, rather it is all just one string of text making it confusing.. 'edit' 'report user' 'reply with quote' etc... i am using 1.4.4 and Leaf and Sand as a template.
What can I do to fix this?

You have no ./english/ folder in the folder with the theme images for the buttons.
hmm. this is the third theme ive used over time, and ive always had this problem, tho it has been more evident since i had my version updated and applied the newest template. I am very much a novice, what should I do?
Well, it's only happening because there's no images for the buttons. For a quick fix, locate the ./images/english/ folder, and copy this to a folder called 'english' in the folder with the theme images. This will make the default MyBB buttons show.
Thank you very much, that is much better. Im still missing a few.. i took it from one of my green installs to match..ill have to see if one of the themes i have contains them all.
if i copy the default buttons, will they still be blue? or would they change with the theme?
They'll still be blue as it's just copying an image, but at least there won't be broken images/text showing. If you want to replace these images with something better, you can, but to stop the problem there just needs to be 'an image' there.
