Is there a way I can force users to display posts using the classic mode? I know this is changeable in the User CP, but is there a way to make the un-classic mode unavailable to people?

You could remove the option from the User CP template. I am not sure which template it is though. Also to set everyone to have classic mode you have to run an SQL query.

because people don't expect such a convoluted solution to a simple problem that should be handled in the default installation

Thanks for the reply. I couldn't find this in search, I didn't think to search for "postbit"... I will spend a bit longer searching next time, though. Thanks again.
