Please fix the maual in newer versions of MyBB as some webservices require you to chmod the folders inside a folder before you can chmod the folder itself.

I.E
chmod /inc/settings.php before /inc/

Why do you need to CHMOD ./inc/, exactly...??

chmod of inc is not required...if your host is requiring that then it's likely they have some special security setting.
