Right click on this page and click "View Source".
Search the document for the text you are looking for. With the case of "Replies", you might have to use your noggin to find the right place.
Once you've found the right place try to find out which comment tag it is in. You are looking for tags that look like
With User(s) browsing this forum you'll notice the correct tag is forumdisplay_usersbrowsing. You can then go to your Admin CP and modify templates. You can remove the HTML you require.
As a shameless plug, I have a plugin called template debugger which lists the templates used to generate that page. It also lists the values that are used in that template. Combine the two together and you might be able to guess what template bit does what.
