I changed some code in templates to make my threads look more informative - http://www.vitz-omsk.com/forum-f-8.html
You can see blue column with number of answers in certain thread.
The questin is:
How to make thread change it's box's color when it becomes hot thread? For example if thread bocomes hot the cell with number of answers changes it's color from blue to red. Like here:

how can I use this on portal page? Do I need to find some hooks or something like this?

As far as I know, I don't think you can without modifying some templates. And if it can't be done via templates, some PHP code on the portal.php page will need to be modified to do what you want.

But do you mean with that effect, or like if a thread is hot - show the whole background as red?

I want to use same effect, I would add somewhere around announcemet a box with number of answers. I realize that i will have to do some code edits in portal.php or smth. but want to make it look my way
