We need the limitation because it's not feasible to get every single unread thread from (for example) the past year. MyBB can't do it because it doesn't record the information for that long.
The View New Threads is a mirror of the View New Posts - basically retrieving all the topics that have been made since your last visit to the forum. I don't see any need in going further than this, and unanswered threads.
