How bad can it be on large boards? Let's say I have 1000 active users and 250,000 posts.

Another related question, when I mark a forum as read, is the threadsread info cleaned for all threads in this forum or it stays in the DB?
Sorry, I meant not exactly disabling the option, I meant giving a really large number, that is, disabling to erase that info and keeping it forever. (I though that was what 0 meant.)

Disabling read thread from database option is present in Admin CP > Configuration and Settings > Server Optimization sttings ... give the value (in days) that how many days you want that a thread should be in read mod.
and yes, if you mark a forum as read, all threads within it will be read
