out of curiosity I tried a little detour this afternoon.
1) copied my smf db to a temp database
2) installed phpbb3 and converted the smf forum to phpbb3
3) verified that attachments are there
3) installed mybb and used the merger to go from phpbb3 to mybb (instead directly from smf).
Now I have some attachments copied over from that temp. phpbb3 forum, but sadly it got even worse as them merge seem to have attached these documents (mostly pictures) to the wrong posts! So some posts end up with attchments they never had in the first place and some dont have theirs anymore.
Avatars still all missing though (got moved correctly from smf -> phpbb3).
From the formerly 593 attachments and 66 avatars, only 269 files acutally made it into the uploads directory, the rest seems lost in space.
Now I will be silent and patiently wait for your beta 5 :-)
