How hard is it to upgrade my version of PHP on my website from 4.4.1 to 5.1.0?

I just found out that a staff worker at the host would have to install it and it spposedly not compatible with the servers. Or something. Sad

So this book I got at Chapters was a waste of 41.99$ CDN. I'm going back on Monday and gonna get another book.
