i have future plans of setting up a forum but in the meantime, i would like to setup a simple blog. is it possible to use MyBB as a blog for the time being?

Well sure you have the capability of posting new threads, and people commenting can post replies. But other than that it depends on what features you're looking for. You won't be able to 'trackback' other blogs or have other blogs do trackbacks on you, for example.
Guess you could use it, but there is more specific blogging software out there that is made for blogging.
