Is it safe to change default registration group in member.php?
Or I need to edit smth else?

I'm quite sure you'd have to make more edits than just there... what are you wanting to do this for?? May be able to suggest a better method

I don't get why people don't just edit the default group to suit their needs, rather than placing them in another group.

I'm gonna restrict newbies from using some options (reputation, some subforums, etc).
After some days promotion system will move them to common group (gid2).

I don't want to move all existent users to new group, 'cause in some of my addons access is restricted by gid.
